 Bangkok Metro (MRT)

Opened just recently in July 2004, the Bangkok Metro has become one of the most popular ways to travel around the Capital. This hassle free transport option is cheap, fast and avoids all of Bangkok's infamous traffic jams. The advantages of the Metro are that it covers many major city locations and that there are interchanges with the BTS Sky Train. This makes travelling an easier task and more fun to do. To date, there is just one line that goes from Bang Sue to Hua Lampong. This has been the first and only line running through Bangkok carrying around 40,000 people per hour in each direction. The operation times are from 6am to midnight daily, similar to those of the Sky Train.

In 2009, the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) plans on expanding their Metro Network by introducing 3 new lines covering a much broader side of the metropolis.

MRT Metro Token

This little token is the ticket used for the MRT Metro.

The Fare

Ticket prices vary from 20 – 40 baht and can be bought either directly at a service counter in any Metro station or from the ticketing machines. You will notice it isn’t necessary to ask the service counter for help as ticket distributors are very user-friendly and easy to operate. A clear and detailed list of every stop is given in either Thai or in English with the according fare.
The MRT Metro uses RFID contact-less technology for its ticketing system. Instead of getting a regular paper ticket you will receive a token where all the necessary journey information is filled in electronically. Be sure not to lose this token as it is used to enter and exit the metro stations.

Currently it isn't possible to use the same ticket for the MRT Metro and the BTS Skytrain. However, this will be possible in the future as there are plans to standardize the system.
