 Cost if Living in Bangkok

  Cost of living in Bangkok

Thailand is a rather inexpensive country and the cost of living is low, especially when it comes to accommodation and food. These low prices have attracted many foreigners over the past years to relocate themselves to Bangkok or other cities and provinces of Thailand. However, as a foreigner you will have to live with the fact that prices might be higher than for locals. A good example is the National Park, where the entry fee for a Thai costs 20 Baht and for a foreigner astonishing 500 Baht! While Transportation around Bangkok is rather cheap, considering the distance of certain destinations, it may cost you more than you think. Taxis are cheap and convenient but can get quite pricy when used on a daily basis. Although public transportation

Thai Money

such as Metro or Skytrain are the best alternatives, they do not cover all areas of Bangkok, which leaves you no other choice than using Public Busses or Taxis.

Accommodation

Apartments and studios in Bangkok vary from around 1500 – 50,000 Baht per month, depending on condition, location and size. Since Thailand is a hot country you will probably have the air-conditioner running most of the time, which is energy consuming. Electricity bills vary from 2000 – 8000 Baht per Month. Before getting a nice Apartment think about how much you will be spending just for electricity. Some venues such as Apartment hotels go low on the Room rates but compensate that with unbelievable high electricity bills. Water bills are by far much cheaper and come up to about 100 Baht per Month.

It is advised to always check how much you are going to pay for electricity and beware if the price is over 20 Baht per unit.

Transportation

The simplest and most convenient way is by using the BTS Sky Train and the MRT Metro. Single journey are priced from 10 to 40 Baht. A normal Taxi journey through the city will cost about 120 Baht, if traffic 200 Baht. You can always request the driver to take the “toll way” or highway during rush hours. The fee for that usually costs around 40 – 70 Baht.

Food

Thai food is affordable and tasty but eating the similar based dishes each day can get boring. Like many foreigners staying in Thailand, they start to look for alternative dishes that remind them a bit of Home. Foreign food can be ordered and the cost of that can range from 200 – 1000 Baht per meal. Comparing that with the 50 Baht Thai meals you can get in Restaurants, it does make a huge difference. Just keep in mind, unless you really love Thai food to its death you will probably be seeking for a change faster than you would have thought.

Social Events (Bowling, Cinema, Karaoke, Bars, Clubs etc.)

Bangkok in its design offers high class lounges that host social events. Karaoke places, usually next to bowling runways are surely one of the most modern venues in Asia to go to. Singing with your friends while enjoying a delicious meal is very popular amongst the younger generation.

Example of the cost for certain Activities

Clubbing / going to Disco : min 500 Baht per Person
Cinema: 160 Baht for regular seats, 500 Baht for VIP seats
Bar: around 100 Baht per Beer, 2,000 for a Bottle of Whiskey
Bowling: 300-400 Baht per Person
Karaoke:  about 400 Baht per Hour
Go-Karting: 800 Baht per 30 mins
Jet Ski: 1,200 Baht per 30 mins

It really depends on how big your Budget is but one thing is for sure. You will most probably travel by Taxi and giving the Impression that Thailand is cheap you go out and have fun much more than you used to back home, thus spending also more.

Studying in Thailand

If you are a Student at one of Bangkok’s Universities and live by yourself you should have at least 30,000 Baht ($1000) in order to live comfortable and wealthy.

Transportation: 6,000 Baht
Food: 8,000 Baht
Mobile Phone: 1,000 Baht (if you phone a lot, higher of course)
Transportation: 6,000 Baht
Social Events: 8,000 Baht
