 Learning Thai for Tourists

Learning Thai can be a challenging experience as pronounciation is key and a words which seem similar can have different meanings.

For example: One of the is the word "kao". It depends on how it is pronounced and has 5 different meanings.

- Kao (said in a fast pace and high pitch) means to enter into a place.
- Kao (in a rising tone) means he/she (him/her)
- Kao (in a long high tone) means Rice
- Kao (in a long straight tone) means White
- Kao (in a downward long tone) means News

 Gor Gai

Gor Gai - a chicken, the first letter of the Thai alphabet.

So while you learn Thai please keep in mind that learning the grammar is one thing, but most importantly is to hit the right tones. It would be beneficial to study at a school with either a private teacher or in a classroom.

If you would like to study by yourself here is a list of books which we would recommended.

- Thai for Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced Learns by Benjawan Poomsan Becker

and also

- Conversational Thai: Learn to Speak and Understand Thai with Pimsleur Language Programs (Simon & Schuster's Pimsleur) which is an Audio Book.
